BFFs Alison and Gemma make up the boutique stationery company Paper Lions ...
Tell me something about yourself?
Paper Lions is the combined forces of lifelong friends Alison Groves and Gemma Young. We met when we were 6 years old. It was our mutual creative passions and quirky senses of humour that drew us together. Back then we would spend a vast majority of our time daydreaming and doodling, in the classroom, in the playground and together over the telephone in the afternoons. We would chat on the telephone endlessly about what illustrations and animations we liked and things we would like to draw.
Little has changed as the years have passed. Ali trained in Graphic Design and Gem studied Fine Art, we still chat on the phone and dream up things to draw
together. We love uniting to come up with funny little thoughts and pieces of art and this has been injected into Paper Lions a boutique stationery company that currently specialises in greeting cards. This is what we love to do and this is what we want to continue to do.
What are your sources of inspiration?
We inspire each other. We talk about design, fashion, art and trends. Being Sydney-siders we are lucky enough to have the beauty of the beaches and parks around us as well as the dynamic city to keep informed. We go shopping (a lot) and are influenced by what we see, but ultimately it comes down to Ali and Gem sitting together or chatting on the telephone coming up with quirky ideas and concepts that make us laugh or smile. We hope that we can make others laugh too.
Where and when did you learn your craft? Who taught you?
Creativity has always been innate to the two of us, we have always loved to draw and make things. Art was always a favorite subject at school, which we carried into our adult lives. Our talents have matured over time and have been shaped by training in Sydney, Australia. Ali’s sharp eye for detail and keen sense for upcoming trends is a testimony to her graphic design training at Billy Blue School of Graphic Art. Gem’s developed hand and tactile sensibility owes thanks to the National Art School.
Aside from your craft, what else do you enjoy doing?
Ali enjoys live theatre, musicals, diving into waves at the beach, cuddling puppies, eating copious amounts of chocolate and excessively drinking cappuccinos. Gem enjoys live music, watching animations, watching her balcony garden grow, lying on the beach listening to the lapping water, cuddling puppies, eating chocolate (balanced by a healthy savory intake) and drinking a good soy flat white.
What piece of advice can you give to other artists?
Do not blame other people for what you have not yet achieved. Dreams will only work if you do.
What are your plans for the future? Our future plans are to work on our
dream, expand our range of cards, introduce new items such as prints, bags and stationery. Our aim is to have our range accepted into retail outlets, boutique gift shops and florists.
Check out Paper Lions at the Dreamers Autumn Market on Saturday, March 16th.
